LANGUAGE
Oral language skills are best developed through real life conversations, interactions, play, books and within functional and engaging daily activities. We encourage parents to support their child’s language development by asking questions such as Who? What? Where? When/ Why? How did they feel? This can be done orally first, and then as a written sample together if desired.
Include sequencing questions i.e. What happened first? Next? And then? Finally?
Questions related to time also beneficial i.e. What happened before/after….?
Further higher order questions include Inference i.e. Why do you think that happened? Why does...? and Prediction i.e. What will happen next?
Visual supports to assist students to follow instruction, understand directions etc are provided in the Visuals section of this page.
If your child has a diagnosed language disability and is currently attending sessions with a speech pathologist please contact them regarding the level and type of instruction they are currently working on with your child i.e.
